In a Florida courtroom, Ryan Routh, the man convicted of attempting to assassinate U.S. President Donald Trump at a golf course in 2024, received a life sentence on Wednesday. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Shipley emphasized the gravity of Routh’s crime, stating that such actions undermine American democracy. Despite Routh’s defense attorney arguing that he did not proceed with the assassination, Judge Aileen Cannon remarked on Routh’s extensive criminal record during the sentencing.
Routh, who had initially planned to represent himself, was granted legal counsel for the sentencing phase. The judge condemned Routh’s lack of remorse and issued a life sentence without the possibility of parole, along with an additional seven years on gun-related charges. His sentences for other offenses will be served concurrently.
Prosecutors highlighted Routh’s meticulous plotting to kill Trump before attempting the act at a golf course. During the trial, a Secret Service agent testified about intercepting Routh before any harm was done. Routh, in a motion requesting legal representation, expressed unconventional views, including offering to trade his life for those unjustly imprisoned in other countries.
Judge Cannon, appointed by Trump in 2020, criticized Routh’s behavior but ultimately granted him legal representation to ensure due process. Routh’s history of felony convictions and public anti-Trump sentiments were also noted, shedding light on his motives.
