A Mississippi synagogue previously targeted by the Ku Klux Klan was recently set ablaze by a suspect who admitted to intentionally attacking the historic Jewish place of worship, according to the FBI. The 19-year-old suspect, Stephen Pittman, was charged with maliciously damaging the Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Mississippi. Pittman referred to the synagogue as “the synagogue of Satan” during his confession.
During the initial court appearance via video call, Pittman, who had bandaged hands, mentioned his educational background and confirmed being a high school graduate. Prosecutors stated that if convicted, Pittman could face a prison sentence ranging from five to 20 years. The suspect is set to attend a preliminary and detention hearing on Jan. 20.
In response to the incident, Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized seeking severe penalties for the attacker. The Beth Israel Congregation expressed determination to continue Jewish life in Jackson despite the tragedy.
The fire, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, caused significant damage to the synagogue’s library and administrative offices. The synagogue’s president, Zach Shemper, vowed to rebuild the synagogue and received offers from various churches to use their spaces for worship during the rebuilding phase.
Beth Israel Congregation, established in 1860, faced previous attacks, including bombings by the KKK in the 1960s due to its stance against segregation and racism. Governor Tate Reeves condemned the recent arson attack, labeling it a heinous act that will not be tolerated.
The incident is part of a concerning trend of antisemitism in the U.S., with organizations like the Anti-Defamation League calling for swift action against such violence. The synagogue is determined to stand strong against hatred and rebuild despite the challenges faced.
