Southern British Columbia is facing the potential for a dry summer ahead, as per the latest information provided by the province’s River Forecast Centre. The Centre’s recent bulletin highlights the combination of low snowpack, early snowmelt, and warm temperatures, which are heightening the risk of drought, particularly in the southern regions. The bulletin emphasizes the significance of spring weather in relation to concerns over summer drought conditions.

The River Forecast Centre, responsible for monitoring water supply in the province, reports that precipitation levels were below average across British Columbia in April, with the southern areas experiencing particularly dry conditions. Additionally, above-average temperatures, reaching up to 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than normal, have accelerated snowmelt, resulting in a thin snowpack.

Following the dry and warm weather in April, similar conditions have persisted into the first week of May. The bulletin indicates varying snowpack levels across British Columbia as of May 1, ranging from well above normal to well below average. By early May, around 15 percent of the annual snowpack had melted, compared to the usual six percent at that time of year. As of May 7, 28 percent of the snowpack had already melted.

Environment Canada’s forecast predicts temperatures above normal for the months of May through July in British Columbia. Furthermore, some climatologists are suggesting the possibility of a “super” El Niño event this year, which could bring significantly warmer temperatures and an increased risk of drought.

The B.C. Wildfire Service has implemented restrictions on open fires in various parts of the province due to the dry vegetation and wildfire fuel caused by recent warm weather. With windy conditions expected over the weekend, there is concern that any new wildfires could spread rapidly. As of May 8, there are currently 25 wildfires burning in British Columbia, with 76 percent of them suspected to be human-caused.

The province is urged to take precautions as the risk of drought and wildfires looms large in the coming months.
