The head coach of the Swift Current Broncos has stepped down following an inquiry by the Western Hockey League that revealed violations of the league’s conduct standards. Dean DeSilva resigned from his role as head coach after receiving a five-game suspension and a $10,000 fine from the WHL. The league determined that DeSilva had breached conduct standards in two separate on-ice incidents while disciplining players.
WHL Commissioner Dan Near emphasized the league’s culture of accountability, stating that all members must adhere to consistent conduct standards. He highlighted the league’s commitment to integrity and ensuring the well-being of everyone involved in the sport. DeSilva’s suspension lasted from November 5 to November 11, but he announced his resignation on November 14.
Broncos General Manager Chad Leslie expressed that the decision for DeSilva to resign was made in the best interest of both parties and the organization. The team aims to maintain a positive environment for all players. This resignation comes after the Swift Current Broncos and former head coach Devan Praught mutually parted ways two years ago due to a similar conduct violation leading to a suspension.
In a related development, the WHL also suspended Peter Anholt, the general manager of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, and fined the team $10,000. Anholt was found to have utilized intimidating behavior and language during a post-game speech to players following a loss to Edmonton in October. He will resume his duties on November 26 and expressed regret for his actions, committing to higher standards in the future.
Both investigations into DeSilva and Anholt were initiated based on tips received through the WHL Respect Line, an anonymous reporting platform. The league remains dedicated to upholding conduct standards and fostering a positive environment for players and staff.
