Olha Zolotkova, who arrived in Winnipeg shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, initially faced language barriers as she didn’t speak English. Fast forward to the present, she is now embarking on the journey of establishing her own business venture.

Expressing her emotions in her new Exchange District showroom, Zolotkova shared, “I’m thrilled and a bit apprehensive, but overall, I am happy because we now have the freedom and opportunity to start something new.” Despite having a background in teaching, being a principal, and working as a textbook editor in Ukraine, Zolotkova had envisioned starting a daycare upon moving to Canada. However, during a summer break from her role as an educational assistant at a Winnipeg school, she decided to launch By Zola. This online store and appointment-based clothing boutique cater to plus-size women’s fashion, a niche she identified while shopping in Winnipeg.

Zolotkova, who continues to work as an educational assistant, is optimistic about the market reception for the clothing lines she is introducing. She highlighted her enthusiasm for both education and creating something new, expressing hope for the success of her endeavor.

According to a provincial spokesperson, nearly 30,000 Ukrainians have arrived in Manitoba through the reception and welcoming center since February 2022. Among them, more than 27,600 health cards have been issued. While there is no official tally on the number of businesses initiated by Ukrainian immigrants, Zolotkova is not alone in her entrepreneurial pursuits.

Another individual, Mila Shykota, created the Ukrainian Guide to Winnipeg, an online directory showcasing businesses established by Ukrainian newcomers and others offering Ukrainian products or cuisine. Vitaliy Lebezun, the vice-president of Warkentin Business Solutions, mentioned that his company has been assisting Ukrainians with inquiries regarding business startup requirements and self-employment. He anticipates an ongoing interest in entrepreneurship as more individuals settle down in Manitoba.

Yuliia Okhrimenko and her husband, Serhii, relocated to Winnipeg, establishing KoloShop, a Ukrainian gift store within House of Local. The shop features a variety of items crafted by individuals who fled Ukraine due to the war. For the couple, KoloShop represents more than a business; it symbolizes community support and unity.

Reflecting on the challenges of transitioning to a new country, Yuliia emphasized the importance of aiding fellow Ukrainians in selling their products and earning income. Despite feeling settled in Winnipeg, she acknowledged the emotional tug between her present and past homes, underscoring the bittersweet process of building a new life while cherishing memories of Ukraine.

While Zolotkova contemplates her future between Canada and Ukraine, where her family now resides, she is focused on nurturing her business as a means of integrating into Manitoba’s community.
