Victoria Mboko emerged victorious over Spain’s Cristina Bucsa in a thrilling three-set match, securing a 7-5, 6-7 (9), 6-2 win to claim the Hong Kong Open title. Hailing from Burlington, Ontario, the 19-year-old tennis phenom showcased her prowess by serving nine aces, marking her second WTA championship this season following her triumph at the National Bank Open in Montreal back in August.

Reflecting on her victory, Mboko expressed her delight in ending the season on a high note while emphasizing the importance of maintaining composure and managing expectations in the competitive tennis landscape. She acknowledged the unpredictability of the sport, noting the presence of numerous talented players and the need to approach each match with a day-by-day mindset.

Having previously defeated Bucsa in straight sets during Rome qualifying earlier in the year, Mboko extended her dominance over her opponent to 2-0 with this latest win. Despite facing a tough challenge in the match and losing the second set, Mboko remained resilient, attributing her success to regrouping and letting go of past setbacks to focus on delivering a strong performance in the decisive third set.

In a hard-fought semifinal, Mboko overcame fellow Canadian Leylah Fernandez to secure her spot in the final, showcasing her determination and skill on the court. Overcoming a wrist injury that briefly derailed her progress earlier in the season, Mboko has demonstrated resilience and perseverance in her journey to the top ranks of the WTA, with projections placing her among the top 20 players when the updated rankings are revealed next Monday.
