As the scorching heat and humidity grip Winnipeg, many residents are seeking refuge indoors to stay cool and hydrated. Meanwhile, various outreach organizations have been gathering water bottles to distribute to vulnerable individuals living on the city’s streets.

Southern Manitoba is under an orange-level heat warning issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada, forecasting temperatures in the mid-to-high 30s and humidex values in the mid-40s over the coming days. Relief from the intense heat is not expected until Tuesday when temperatures are projected to slightly decrease into the low 30s or high 20s.

Margot Ross, the development director at Siloam Mission, emphasized the life-threatening nature of the extreme heat for community members without adequate access to shelter from the sun. She highlighted the vulnerability of individuals experiencing homelessness who are at risk due to the soaring temperatures.

Siloam Mission is actively providing support by offering cold drinks, meals, and a cool indoor space for those in need. The demand for assistance, including over 600 water bottles distributed daily, has surged in line with the rising temperatures, according to Ross. Additionally, the organization is requesting donations of light summer clothing, sunscreen, and food items to cater to the escalating needs of the community.

Nearby, volunteers like Carina Blumgrund and Mitch Bourbonniere are distributing water bottles to individuals outside Main Street Project, with a larger event scheduled through OPK (Okichidah Pimahtisiwin Kiskinawmatowin) later in the day. Blumgrund emphasized the critical role of such efforts in keeping vulnerable individuals alive during the life-threatening heatwave.

Mitch Bourbonniere, an outreach worker with OPK, highlighted the importance of conducting wellness checks and ensuring proper hydration for individuals in the North Main Street area. He stressed the need to support the most vulnerable members of society during extreme weather conditions, both in scorching heat and freezing cold.

The collaborative efforts of these outreach organizations and volunteers aim to provide essential support and relief to those facing the harsh impacts of the current heatwave in Winnipeg.
