Canadian athlete Sophia Howell achieved a significant milestone by securing a spot on the podium at the World Triathlon Cup for the first time on Sunday, claiming third place in the sprint-distance event.
Hailing from Airdrie, Alberta, Howell completed the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike ride, and five-kilometer run in a remarkable time of one hour, one minute, and 12 seconds in San Pedro de la Paz, Chile.
“I’m thrilled,” expressed the elated 23-year-old Howell. “Today’s outcome exceeded my expectations, and I’m absolutely delighted.”
Howell finished just three seconds behind Jeanne Lehair from Luxembourg and nine seconds behind the race champion, Miriam Casillas Garcia of Spain.
Meanwhile, Emy Legault from L’Ile Perrot, Quebec, secured the 12th position in the competition.
On the men’s side, Martin Sobey from Charlottetown emerged as the top-performing Canadian, finishing in 14th place.
