In a rare initiative for cabin-dwellers, Nathan Pitka and his community have planted over 30,000 seedlings in the past fortnight. Pitka, who lost his five cabins in a wildfire that devastated the East Trout Lake area in Saskatchewan last summer, took matters into his own hands after observing no immediate government action for reforestation. Coordinating with companies and the provincial government, Pitka spearheaded the planting efforts, focusing on restoring the heavily wooded region with various tree species and native shrubs.

With support from government and corporate programs, Pitka and volunteers worked tirelessly to cover 40 hectares with new trees, aiming to make the area more resilient to future fires. Despite the daunting task of replacing the 1,500 trees lost per hectare, they are optimistic about planting 800 trees per hectare.

Local resident Nic Swiderski, who lost his home in the wildfire, reminisces about the lush forest that once graced the area. He and his father, among the few year-round residents, are part of the community’s rebuilding efforts. While acknowledging the long road ahead for the new trees to reach maturity, Swiderski is hopeful about the rejuvenation of East Trout Lake.

Pitka’s goal is to complete the reforestation project within two years, coinciding with the anticipated repair of his own cottage. Despite the individual efforts, he recognizes that nature will play a significant role in the community’s restoration process.
