A tragic air disaster involving a UPS cargo plane in Kentucky has claimed the lives of at least 14 individuals, including a child. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear confirmed the death toll in a statement released on Friday evening, urging prayers for the affected families and the Louisville community.

According to federal investigators, the UPS cargo plane experienced a fire in its left wing and lost an engine shortly before crashing and exploding post takeoff at UPS Worldport, the company’s global aviation hub in Louisville. The intense blaze engulfed the aircraft, spreading to nearby businesses in the area.

The National Transportation Safety Board reported that the plane managed to clear the runway’s end fence before crashing near Muhammad Ali International Airport. Security footage from the airport captured the left engine detaching from the wing during takeoff.

Recovery efforts have located the cockpit voice recorder, data recorder, and the engine on the airfield, with debris scattered over a half-mile radius. The crash, which occurred as the plane was departing for Honolulu, resulted in secondary explosions at Kentucky Petroleum Recycling and Grade A Auto Parts, where the child victim was present with a parent.

Emergency responders, including over 200 personnel, rushed to the scene, aiding in the aftermath of the devastating incident. The University of Louisville Hospital treated several individuals, with two in critical condition in the burn unit, while others were discharged after receiving medical care.

UPS resumed operations at its cargo hub, a vital facility that handles a high volume of flights and packages daily. The Louisville airport, situated close to residential areas and attractions, also resumed operations following the tragedy.

Witnesses described the harrowing scene of massive flames and billowing smoke caused by the crash. The impact was felt across the community, with residents and businesses shaken by the sudden and catastrophic event.

Aviation experts noted that the aircraft’s struggle to gain altitude amid the fire posed a grave risk due to the fuel onboard, likening the situation to a potential explosion. The investigation into the crash continues as authorities work to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
