Despite a decrease in illegal border crossings at the North Dakota and Minnesota border with Canada, U.S. authorities remain concerned about the potential for human trafficking leading to fatalities during the harsh winter season.

Scott Garrett, the chief patrol agent for the Grand Forks Sector of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, emphasized the callous nature of human smugglers who prioritize profits over human lives. The Grand Forks Sector oversees the extensive international border shared between North Dakota and Minnesota in the U.S., and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.

Garrett highlighted the dangers faced by illegal migrants attempting crossings, noting that many underestimate the severe cold and are ill-prepared for the rapid onset of frostbite and hypothermia.

While illegal crossings from Canada into the U.S. have declined by approximately 60%, thanks to increased enforcement efforts by the Trump administration, RCMP and the Canada Border Service Agency have also ramped up patrols, leading to a significant reduction in cross-border traffic in both directions.

Garrett mentioned the enhanced resources provided to U.S. border agents in North Dakota and Minnesota, including infrared surveillance cameras, ATVs, snowmobiles, and technological upgrades to aid in locating individuals post-crossing.

Notably, Garrett underscored the tragic consequences of illegal crossings, citing a high-profile case where a family of four from India perished near the U.S. border in Manitoba due to extreme weather conditions.

Despite the progress made in curbing illegal border activities, Garrett reiterated the ongoing challenges faced by border patrol agents in combating human smuggling and ensuring national security.

With the treacherous winter conditions posing significant risks to human safety, Garrett emphasized the critical need for continued vigilance and protection of vulnerable migrants.
