During her time as a homeless individual in St. Thomas, Ont., Sara Pepper recalls the lack of adequate support.

“Being homeless in that area was not ideal at all,” Pepper shared with As It Happens host Nil Kӧksal.

She mentioned the limited resources, lack of services, and societal misunderstanding of homelessness in the region.

Now, due to the town’s proactive initiative to eradicate chronic homelessness, Pepper now has secure accommodation and a comfortable bed every night, allowing her to rebuild her life.

The town aims to eliminate long-term street homelessness in St. Thomas within two years.

St. Thomas, with a population of approximately 46,000 in southwestern Ontario, relied heavily on the local Ford plant for 44 years until its closure in 2011.

Like many Canadian communities, St. Thomas faces challenges of housing scarcity, opioid crisis, and a surge in homelessness.

The situation used to cause Mayor Joe Preston anxiety, but with the forthcoming Volkswagen electric battery plant and the success of the anti-homelessness strategy, he expresses optimism.

“We are at the brink of progress. We are advancing,” Preston stated. “We are solving an issue ahead of numerous other cities in Canada.”
