Basketball Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens, known for his dual induction as a player and coach, passed away at the age of 88, as confirmed by his family on Sunday. Wilkens, a revered figure in the world of basketball, excelled both on the court as a point guard and later on as a successful coach, setting a record by coaching 2,487 NBA games. His illustrious career saw him inducted into the Hall of Fame thrice — as a player, coach, and member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team.

Wilkens, who led the Toronto Raptors to two playoff appearances from 2000 to 2003, was praised by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver as a true embodiment of the sport. He was honored as one of the league’s top players and coaches, recognized for his remarkable contributions to the game over the years.

The legendary coach, who won an NBA title with the Seattle SuperSonics in 1979, remained a revered figure in Seattle basketball, often referred to as the “godfather” of the sport in the city. Wilkens, known for his graceful leadership style, retired with a coaching record of 1,332 wins, a feat that solidified his place in basketball history.

Wilkens, a nine-time NBA All-Star, was the first coach to achieve 1,000 wins in the league. His impact extended beyond the court, with a statue erected in his honor outside Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. Recognized for his commitment to service and mentorship, Wilkens left a lasting legacy in the basketball community.

Born in New York in 1937, Wilkens honed his basketball skills in Brooklyn before embarking on a successful career that spanned playing and coaching roles. Wilkens’ legacy as both a player and coach will forever be remembered, showcasing his unparalleled dedication to the game and his lasting impact on the basketball world. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, children Leesha, Randy, Jamee, and seven grandchildren.
