Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirmed that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio did not bring up President Donald Trump’s suggestions of Canada becoming the 51st state during their discussions. Anand expressed that Rubio did not mention or imply such ideas in their conversations.
Anand is set to host Rubio and other foreign ministers from Group of Seven nations in Ontario’s Niagara Region for talks on mutual economic and security concerns amid global instability. She emphasized the importance of addressing critical issues together during this tumultuous geopolitical period.
The relationship between Canada and the United States has faced strains due to Trump’s trade policies and annexation threats. Earlier discussions at the G7 foreign ministers meeting revealed concerns about Canadian sovereignty, with Rubio indicating that Trump favored Canada joining the U.S. for economic reasons.
During the G7 leaders summit in Alberta, Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Trump showed respect for Canadian sovereignty and did not raise the “51st state” topic. The upcoming meeting will focus on peace and security matters, strategic collaboration, and global stability, according to the U.S. State Department.
Carney’s efforts to stabilize ties with the U.S. encountered challenges after an Ontario-sponsored TV ad featuring Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs led to a suspension of negotiations by Trump. Anand mentioned that discussions on trade matters are overseen by Canada-U.S. Minister Dominic LeBlanc, while the G7 summit will cover diverse topics like critical minerals, Arctic security, and Gaza.
In addition to G7 members, Canada has invited foreign ministers from various countries to broaden the summit’s perspectives. Efforts to diversify trade partners and strengthen relations with India are ongoing to reduce reliance on U.S. trade amid protectionist policies. However, advocacy groups like Sikhs For Justice have expressed concerns, planning protests during the G7 meetings.
Anand highlighted the inclusion of additional countries from diverse regions to facilitate a robust and inclusive dialogue at the G7 summit. The event aims to foster a constructive exchange on global challenges and opportunities.
