A rally was held in Nelson, B.C., to protest the decision to euthanize a young grizzly bear from a well-known family of grizzlies seen frequently in the area. Katie Graves, the founder of the Ursa Project Society, described the emotional scene at the rally with tears and hugs among attendees.
Graves expressed disappointment over the death of the yearling grizzly, which had a leg deformity or injury. She highlighted that the bear was mobile, kept pace with its family, and could feed adequately. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service justified its decision based on the bear’s age, injury, and past conflict history, deeming it unsuitable for rehabilitation or relocation.
The community members are concerned about the fate of the other grizzlies in the area, particularly a sow and two yearlings. The public response on social media has been critical of the decision to euthanize the bear, emphasizing the importance of better waste management practices to prevent such incidents.
Wildlife biologist Clayton Lamb emphasized the need for stricter policies to reduce attractants and prevent conflicts with bears. He stressed the challenges of rehabilitating habituated bears and the necessity of addressing attractants in communities to avoid future bear incidents.
The City of Nelson stated its commitment to wildlife conservation by implementing measures such as bear-resistant garbage cans, public education programs, and enforcement of waste management regulations to minimize human-bear conflicts.
