Former special counsel Jack Smith, who brought charges against ex-U.S. President Donald Trump in two unresolved cases, criticized the dissemination of “inaccurate and deceptive narratives” during his initial public testimony before Congress on his investigations.
Smith, appointed by the U.S. Justice Department to lead two existing probes into Trump following his 2024 election bid announcement, had largely refrained from public statements outside legal documentation until his recent appearance.
“President Trump faced charges due to compelling evidence showing deliberate violation of the laws he swore to uphold,” Smith stated before the House judiciary committee.
When asked if he would prosecute a former president under similar circumstances today, Smith affirmed he would take legal action, regardless of the individual’s political affiliation.
Smith and his team ultimately indicted Trump on allegations of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election he lost to Joe Biden and intentionally retaining classified materials until 2023, including top-secret documents, at his Florida property.
In response, Trump launched personal attacks on Smith, labeling the former federal government official, who served in both Republican and Democratic administrations, as a “Radical left Marxist prosecutor” and a “sick son of a bitch” at a recent White House event.
Prior to this incident, Trump and the White House released an alternate narrative regarding the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, after weeks of disputing the election outcome.
Smith pointed out that Trump bore significant responsibility for the events of Jan. 6, emphasizing this during questioning by Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell, who denounced Republican lawmakers for attempting to discredit the former special counsel.
Republicans Ready to Testify: Smith
Smith currently faces an inquiry by the Office of Special Counsel, following the pattern of several officials who clashed with Trump and now face legal scrutiny during his second term, such as former FBI director James Comey and New York State Attorney General Letitia James.
Trump publicly called for Smith’s prosecution, alleging “widespread perjury” without substantiating his claims, based on the former special counsel’s testimony.
During his testimony, Smith expressed belief that the Justice Department under Trump would find grounds to prosecute him.
