Comedian Liz Miele has recently experienced a significant drop in her earnings, which is a shared struggle among many in the industry. SiriusXM has discontinued its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which used to showcase over 800 comedians, and introduced a new channel spearheaded by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

This transition has resulted in a loss of income and visibility for Miele and numerous other comedians, particularly those in the working class. Miele expressed how SiriusXM was a crucial financial lifeline for her and many others during tough times.

The replacement channel, according to industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup, now features only 275 comedians, with a substantial portion of airplay going to the top 50 performers like Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, and Jim Gaffigan. This has led to a stark concentration of wealth within the comedy industry, leaving many struggling comedians at a disadvantage.

Canadian comedian Danish Anwar highlighted how the royalties from Raw Comedy were essential for many comedians’ livelihoods, and the abrupt change has had a significant negative impact on their earnings. He emphasized the importance of these royalties, especially for Canadian comics trying to establish themselves in the U.S.

Despite the backlash from fellow comedians like Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf, Sebastian Maniscalco clarified that the channel’s revamp was not his decision. SiriusXM confirmed that the change was due to the channel’s underperformance, and they remain committed to providing a platform for comedians at all career stages.

In response to the situation, Maniscalco pledged to work with SiriusXM to ensure diverse voices in comedy are represented on his channel. However, some comedians remain skeptical, emphasizing the importance of concrete actions over statements.

Comedian Steph Tolev, recalling a past incident involving SiriusXM’s Canada Laughs channel, urged comedians to unite and speak out against decisions that negatively impact their community. Despite the challenges ahead, there is hope for increased solidarity and advocacy within the comedy industry to address issues of fair pay and treatment.
