A young football player from Winnipeg’s high school league tragically passed away after sustaining a severe neck injury in a recent game. The sad news was shared by Stephanie Ciaralli on Facebook, expressing relief that the player, known as Dee, is now at peace. Dee, also referred to as Darius Hartshorne, was a beloved Grade 12 student at Sisler Spartans and was injured during a match against Tec Voc Hornets while returning the opening kickoff.
Following the incident, the entire community rallied support for Dee and his family. The superintendent of the Winnipeg School Division, Matt Henderson, emphasized the importance of providing assistance to those affected by the tragedy. The head coach of the Spartans, Sean Esselmont, praised Dee as an exceptional and genuine individual, dearly missed by all who knew him.
In a solemn tribute to their fallen teammate, the Spartans adorned their helmets with decals featuring Dee’s jersey number and prominently displayed his jersey at games. Despite initial hopes for his recovery, Dee’s condition deteriorated, leading to induced coma and subsequent organ damage.
