Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to travel to South Africa for the G20 summit, taking advantage of the absence of U.S. President Donald Trump to engage in trade discussions with other nations. Canada aims to collaborate with other countries in raising funds, promoting critical minerals, and forming ad hoc alliances.

During the summit in Johannesburg, Carney is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from France, Norway, the European Union, Germany, the United Kingdom, and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In contrast, the U.S. has opted out of attending the G20, with only a diplomat present for a ceremonial handover as the country prepares to chair the event next year.

By skipping the summit, Trump has shifted the spotlight away from the event, creating more opportunities for Carney to engage directly with other world leaders and advance Canada’s trade diversification efforts. Carney’s primary focus is on reducing Canada’s reliance on the U.S. market due to ongoing trade challenges and economic uncertainties.

One of Carney’s objectives is to secure foreign investments by holding key bilateral discussions with countries like Qatar, known for its significant sovereign wealth fund. Additionally, Canada seeks to engage with the EU on trade agreements, including the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, from which the U.S. withdrew under Trump’s administration.

Furthermore, Carney plans to emphasize Canada’s initiatives in critical minerals and advocate for collaborative efforts among countries in various sectors such as clean technology and international finance. Despite facing scrutiny over relations with India, Canada remains committed to fostering partnerships where mutual interests align, with plans for Carney to visit India to strengthen ties.

While challenges persist in the Canada-India relationship, efforts to address past issues and enhance cooperation continue. As the Canadian criminal case concerning the assassination of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar progresses, public disclosures may impact bilateral relations. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand underscores the government’s commitment to prioritizing public safety in discussions with India.

Overall, Carney’s participation in the G20 summit signifies Canada’s proactive stance in pursuing diverse trade opportunities and fostering diplomatic ties on the global stage.
