Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado presented her Nobel Peace Prize to U.S. President Donald Trump during a recent meeting at the White House, aiming to influence the direction of Venezuela’s political landscape. Describing the encounter as “excellent,” Machado emphasized Trump’s dedication to the freedom of the Venezuelan populace. This move by Machado followed Trump’s dismissal of the idea of appointing her as Venezuela’s leader in place of the ousted Nicolás Maduro. Trump had actively campaigned for the Nobel Peace Prize before Machado received it and expressed disappointment when he was not chosen.
While Machado handed over the physical gold medal awarded with the prize, the recognition itself remains with her, as the Nobel Institute clarified that the prize cannot be transferred, shared, or revoked. In a separate development, following the meeting between Trump and Machado, U.S. officials disclosed the seizure of another tanker linked to Venezuela. This operation marked the sixth vessel targeted in a series of actions against vessels transporting or previously carrying Venezuelan oil. The U.S. military’s Southern Command confirmed the interception of the tanker Veronica in the Caribbean, underscoring efforts to regulate oil shipments in and out of Venezuela as part of a broader strategy to influence the country’s political landscape.
The ongoing actions to control Venezuela’s oil resources align with Trump’s strategy to pressure Maduro out of power and rebuild Venezuela’s oil industry.
